THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE see proposed site drawings
We are sticking
to projects honoring the physical universe,
so think Sun, Moon, Water, Earth, Fire,
Gravity, Wind, etc.
Monte came up with a context piece, spinning
off of Arlene’s May submission of a spiral
labyrinth.
It involves pvc poles or bamboo (Sara
was going to check with a bamboo contact?)
as making three open rounded, connected
rooms outlined by the poles. Imagine three
of the letter C scribed into the ground
in a line and touching at the ends; then
there are 3 more Cs in a line opposite
the first line of Cs. The two lines of
Cs are set apart from each other by maybe
3 or 4 feet at their closest points. Then
stick poles perhaps 8 inches apart all
along the scribed cs. One could walk in
from either end, and folks could see in
between the poles, though they would
be too close together for passage. He
had several variations, but we liked the
roomlets best. Within each room there
would be two sculptures, each of which
would back against opposite ends of the
bamboo curves.
So, we are hoping for 6 sculptures for
the interior of this installation. Probably
not wider than 4 ft. would serve best,
and they can be up to 7 ft.tall, but they
don’t have to be that tall.
If the sculpture has a front, it should
also have a bold back, as the back will
definitely be seen through the poles that
define the rooms.
Warren and James have cornered the market
for suns, and presented drawings.
Arlene presented a maquette for a different
context piece, giving physical manifestation
to (watch out Sebastopol!) electromagnetic
radiation. For now, she’s given up on
that idea, as the group was so gung ho
for the adaptation of her earlier context
piece.
A bamboo wind chime piece was suggested,
but nobody there grabbed it yet.
Beth presented an ugly drawing but what
the group thought was a good idea for
a fire piece which uses steel bases, steel
rod, and metal meshes representing flames.

Pleez put the third Wednesday on your
calendar, 4:30 at the art center—painting
and drawing room upstairs—for our next
meeting. We’ll have reports back on pvc
pipe availability from Monty, and probably
on bamboo availability from Sara. We’ll
talk about any committees.
Sara had two maquettes, but failed
to bring them as she is traveling in
New York. She will bring them in JULY.
Our site of choice for these works is
Libby Park.
